The chemical formula of the new pigment is YIn1-xMnxO3. Its color can be changed by adjusting the proportion of manganese ions Mn3+ which are responsible for the intense blue color. Names
Oregon blueY, In, and Mn are the symbols of the three constituent elements of the pigment: Yttrium (Y), Indium (In), and Manganese (Mn).
Preparation
The pigment can be prepared by heating the oxides of the three elements yttrium, indium, and manganese (Y2O3, In2O3, and Mn2O3) in the air to a temperature of 1200 – 1300 °C (1).
History of Use
The pigment was first synthesized in 2009 at the Oregon State University and patented in 2012. It is now commercially available as an artists’ pigment.
